Social protection is as a set of public actions that help mitigate the effects of poverty, discrimination and social exclusion on families, by improving access to basic services, supporting a household income in hard times or guaranteeing adequate nutrition for mothers and babies. These contribute to multiple dimensions of child-wellbeing. Social protection programmes remain weak, often underfunded and tend to exclude the neediest. UNICEF works with governments and partners to promote systems that work better for children and increase their lifetime opportunities.
